The Laboratory of the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, is a research unit with a long-standing tradition. The Department of Genetics was established in 1957 as part of the Institute of Botany, and in early 2006 it was transformed into the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology. We are the first research institution in Poland where gene cloning was initiated at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. We can also take pride in one of the first Polish papers in Nature, published in 1974.

In the laboratory, located in a building shared with the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, we have at our disposal all the necessary equipment for standard molecular biology and microbiology experiments, as well as for next-generation sequencing, automated protein purification, cell culture experiments, and experiments involving radioisotopes. We also have IT infrastructure for the analysis of high-throughput experimental data. Some of the equipment is shared with the IBB PAS.

The staff and doctoral students of the Institute conduct a wide range of teaching activities for students of the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, as well as guest lectures at other faculties.

The Institute also hosts the Students’ Molecular Biology Association, and we actively support other students’ scientific organizations.

The Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology conducts a wide range of scientific activities.

Our research focuses on topics such as the regulation of gene expression in various eukaryotic organisms, mitochondrial RNA processing in yeast and humans, applications of genetics in population and archaeological studies, and in human mitochondrial diseases.

Instead of traditional departments, the Institute is organized into independent research groups, each led by a faculty member who is responsible for the funding and research directions of their respective group.
